New York, Sep 5: Serena Williams hammered Karolina Pliskova and scored an easy 6-4, 6-3 win in their quarterfinal match here at the US Open. With the win, Serena has now entered the semifinals of the prestigious tournament.
The easy win was a sweet revenge for Serena as Pliskova was the last player to beat her at the U.S. Open. Pliskova had beaten Serena in their last US Open encounter in 2016. Serena had since then taken a break from tennis as she wanted to have a baby.
Early in the match, Williams was shaky and made a number of unforced errors. In fact, 22 of her 30 unforced errors came in the first set itself. With Serena trailing at 4-2 in the first set, it appeared that Pliskova was on track to beat Williams again.
However, Serena put together a string of 8 games won and swatted aside Pliskova’s challenge to take the game in straight sets.
After the match, Williams said, “I felt so bad because everyone out here was cheering and I wasn’t winning and I thought I’ve got to try harder, I’ve got to do harder. I really feel like right now I’m playing free because I was having a baby this time last year, so I have nothing to prove. I’m just on my way (back) on the tour and doing the best I can.”
In the semifinals, Serena will face Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia who beat Sloane Stephens in another quarterfinal match.
