Question 1) This Indian batsman scored only 1 century in ODIs. But the 2nd innings of that match was rained out and thus, officially, he has no century to his name. Name this player.

a) Saba Karim b) Sadagopan Ramesh c) Robin Singh d) Roger Binny

Robin Singh

The 3rd ODI of the 1997-98 India vs Sri Lanka Series was originally scheduled for 23rd August, 1997. Sri Lanka had already won the first two ODIs of this series. On 23rd August, Sri Lanka won the toss and put India in to bat. Powered by Robin Singh’s 100 (102 deliveries, eleven 4s, one 6), India reached 291 for 9 in 50 overs.

In their reply, Sri Lanka were struggling at 132 for 6 in 19 overs. Unfortunately, heavy rains then forced a wash out. The match was then replayed the next day (reserve day).

On the reserve day, India won the toss and put Sri Lanka in to bat. Sri Lanka scored 264 all out in 49.4 overs, thus setting India a target of 265. In reply, India could only get to 255 for 8 in their 50 overs. Sri Lanka, thus, won the series 3 – 0.

Question 2) Who among the following invented and was granted a patent for an anti-gravity device?

a) Stephen Hawking b) Neil deGrasse Tyson c) Ryan Campbell d) Michael Jackson’s

The right answer is, hold your breath, Michael Jackson.

Jackson, the King of Pop, was tremendously dedicated to his art and over the course of his career, he invented several devices in order to help his craft. These include the famous anti-gravity shoe for which he (along with two others) was awarded US Patent No. 5,255,452 – method and means for creating anti-gravity illusion. It was this shoe which enabled Jackson to perform the famous forward lean that featured in the video of the hit number, Smooth Criminal.

The abstract of the patent filing describes the invention as, “A system for allowing a shoe wearer to lean forwardly beyond his center of gravity by virtue of wearing a specially designed pair of shoes which will engage with a hitch member movably projectable through a stage surface. The shoes have a specially designed heel slot which can be detachably engaged with the hitch member by simply sliding the shoe wearer’s foot forward, thereby engaging with the hitch member.”
